What is the Wet Weather Solutions Program?
Water is one of Kansas City’s most valuable resources. Water enhances our quality of life, and yet, sometimes we can have too much water. Too much water can cause floods, property damage, and even injury and loss of life. It also can impact our sanitary sewer system.
The Wet Weather Solutions Program is designed to address these problems with plans developed with extensive input from our residents. Through strong, creative leadership and a stewardship ethic, the Wet Weather Solutions Program will take action to manage the City’s water resources in a substantial way. The Wet Weather Solutions Program, Kansas City, Mo., will:
- Minimize loss of life and injury and reduce property damage due to
flooding
- Improve water quality
- Maximize economic, social and environmental benefits.
What is the Overflow Control Plan?
The Overflow Control Plan details the City’s commitment to decrease the frequency and volume of overflows from its combined and separate sanitary sewer systems. It is part of the Wet Weather Solutions Program described above. The Overflow Control Plan is structured to:
- Reduce the problem before solving it by getting stormwater out of the sewer system
- Facilitate a comprehensive City-wide Green Solutions Initiative
- Focus early on areas that do the most good
- Create multiple benefits when addressing problems
- Meet regulations.
The Overflow Control Plan will be submitted to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources in July 2008. The plan represents the City’s proposed commitment to the agencies to meet current regulations regarding sewer overflows.
Recently, the public was asked to provide comments on the plan. Read the results.
