Property Crimes Investigations act as the investigative element and liaison between the Patrol Bureau and the prosecutor’s office. Property Crimes detectives provide the follow up on all property crime investigations initiated by patrol officers and initiate their own investigation from their office. Property Crimes Detectives strive to identify crime patterns, organizations and active repeat offenders. Because of the very nature of burglary and stealing offenses, they are both difficult to investigate and time consuming. Suspects generally seek anonymity to commit offenses; therefore, witnesses are seldom known. The solution of these offenses rests with proper crime scene processing for physical evidence and dedicated, hard-working investigators who piece together all known information regarding possible suspects and their method of operation and associates.

The Property Crimes Section is responsible for the prompt and thorough investigation of the following offenses:

Burglary – all classifications

Stealing – all classifications except shoplifting, embezzlement, fraud, and certain thefts by deceit, confidence games, pocket picking, and forged or bogus checks with are investigated by the Fraud and Forgery Sections of this Division
Thefts from interstate and intrastate shipments Receiving (buying and/or possession) of stolen property The location, identification, and recovery of stolen property taken in any of the above offenses, whether locally or from an outside jurisdiction

Auto Theft - the theft of a motor vehicle.  A “motor vehicle” is defined for UCR purposes as a self-propelled vehicle that runs on land surface and no on rails and which fits one of the following property decriptions:
Automobiles
Buses
Recreational Vehicles
Trucks
Other motor vehicles-such as motorcycles, motor scooters, trail bikes, mopeds, snowmobiles, golf carts, whose primary purpose is to transport people.

Property Damage - to willfully or maliciously destroy, damage, deface, or otherwise injure or  personal property without the consent of the owner or the person having custody or control of it.
