Certificate of Appropriateness

Historic Preservation Home | Landmarks Commission Docket | Kansas City Register of Historic Places | Urban Design Guidelines | Historic Research

The Landmarks Commission is authorized to review exterior changes and alterations to properties recognized as local landmarks or located within local historic districts. The Landmarks Commission must approve a Certificate of Appropriateness before a building permit will be issued for exterior work on a designated property. This process is intended to assure that changes or repairs are compatible with the building's architectural character and that work undertaken complements the historic district or individual landmark.

The following brochure "Applying for a Certificate of Appropriateness" explains the application process in greater detail (requires Adobe Acrobat).

To enable the Commission to act promptly upon a request, it is necessary to submit the following:

  1. A succinct description of the project scope
  2. All pertinent plans and elevations (including dimensioned drawings indicating design, materials, finishes, and coloration as appropriate)
  3. Photographs showing existing conditions
  4. A $25 fee.

Please fill out the application form and provide a project narrative that is as specific as possible to expedite the Landmarks Commission's review. You may type on the Certificate of Appropriateness application form. Press the "Tab Key" after each entry to move between fields. When completed, print the typed form. You can not save the typed form unless you have a full version of Acrobat.

It is critical for you to observe the application deadline on the Landmarks Commission Schedule in order for your case to be placed on the Landmarks Commission docket in a timely manner. A complete application submitted on or before the deadline, including all of the above mentioned items, will ensure a prompt hearing for your case.
Failure to provide a complete application by the deadline may result in the Commission's denial or continuance of a case.

Please feel free to contact the
Landmarks Commission office at (816) 513-2902 to discuss your project at any point during the planning phase. Thank you for your cooperation.
