I’ve been waiting to say those words ever since I became mayor. Night Hoops has been a Kansas City tradition since 1992, and I’m thrilled to have it back again in 2008 under the name of the Mayor’s Night Hoops. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Back in the day, I was a ball player. The memories of driving the lane, fighting for rebounds, blocking shots and scoring will be with me for as long as I live. I hope that each of you will capture that same excitement this summer.
This year, the Mayor’s Night Hoops will be better than ever. In addition to the full-court action, we’ll have volleyball and basketball clinics for youth, along with other surprise program activities and entertainment. And, for the first time ever, we will be adding an
on-going slam-dunk contest called “Dunk with the Funk.” The contest will happen during halftime and between games. And if you’re not quite tall enough to dunk, don’t worry – we’ll have an adjustable-height hoop and different contest divisions for size and age.
We’re also going to be starting a new tradition this year: Night Kicks, K.C.’s inaugural
late-night soccer program. It’s time for Kansas City to get on board with the world’s most popular sport.
It’s gonna be a great summer with the Mayor’s Night Hoops!
