The City is committed to providing support and services for those who can least provide for themselves. Below are some of the programs available through the Human Services Division or located in the Robert J. Mohart Multipurpose FOCUS Center, which also provides rooms for cultural, educational, recreational and social events; public meetings and community forums. Programs

Day care services: The Human Services Division monitors contracts that provide City general funds to day care centers to supplement their operating costs.

Day care services for the homeless: The division provides temporary day care service to homeless families to allow the parents an opportunity to work toward resolution of their homelessness.

Foster Grandparent Program: This program supplements the income of low-income older adults by giving them opportunities to work with special needs children. A non-taxable stipend, training and other benefits are provided to these volunteers.

Homeless initiatives: The division provides administrative guidance and monitors several contracts that focus on homeless populations in Kansas City.

Summer Food Service Program for Children: The division sponsors this federally funded program to provide free food during the summer to children who are eligible for free or reduced-cost meals during the school year through the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program. Community organizations or groups that work with youth may contract with the division to become meal sites. For more information, call the Human Services Division, (816) 784-4542.

In-Home Services


Adult Services Program: This program provides services and activities for adults age 60 and up and handicapped people ages 18-59. Congregate services include a hot lunch program, transportation to and from the Mohart Center, information seminars, health screening, exercise, recreation, seasonal festivities and access to the local network of services available to older adults. In-home services include delivered meals, telephone reassurances and caseworker support. For information and enrollment instructions, call (816) 784-4514.

Early Childhood ProgramMohart Head Start (Kansas City, Mo., School District): A child development program designed for the total growth of a child's physical, social and mental development. Services are provided in a day care setting for children ages 2-5 of parents who are employed, enrolled in school, or who are physically handicapped. For more information, call (816) 871-8702 .

Special programs: These services include crisis intervention, emergency shelter (American Red Cross), FEMA Operations, Human Family Reunion, income tax form preparation, American Bridge Association, Mayor's Christmas Tree Program and Christmas in October.
