On Jan. 13, 2005, the City Council authorized the reformation of the Charter Review Commission. Council members gave the Commission a charge of coming back to them in July with suggested changes and streamlining the current 350-plus-page charter.

From the Jan. 13 Council resolution comes this direction: “Mayor Kay Barnes and the City Council desire to identify any inefficiencies and anachronisms in the existing charter and implement changes where necessary in order to insure the most effective and appropriate government possible for Kansas City.”
