Dear resident:
Welcome to another edition of my monthly e-message about how the City is working for you.
2008-09 Budget
The City completed a mid-year analysis of revenues and expenditures for the current year. The results show continued improvement in estimated revenue collections and smaller expenditure overages from the first quarter, therefore, reducing the budgetary imbalance by almost $7 million.
At the request of Mayor Mark Funkhouser, the Office of Management and Budget will present the detailed Submitted Budget and user-friendly Citizens’ Budget at the same time. The fiscal year 2008-2009 Budget will be presented to the City Council on Feb. 14, 2008. Find out more about the budget calendar.
City responds to winter weather
The City responded quickly to snow and ice storms that hit the area in recent weeks. The Public Works, Parks and Recreation and Water Services departments removed snow and ice from about 900 miles of primary and arterial routes and maintained a passable driving lane on more than 1,500 miles of residential streets. City crews applied salt and removed snow around the clock on primary and arterial streets. The Emergency Operations Center was activated during the ice storm to monitor the conditions and coordinate the City's response efficiently and effectively.
During winter weather conditions, I encourage residents to call the 3-1-1 Action Center at 311 or (816) 513-1313 to report tree limbs blocking the right of way, slick spots after the snow ends or for other questions. Use these tips to help prevent power outages due to ice and minimize risks from fire, falls and carbon monoxide.
Growth at KCI
American Airlines will hire an additional 200 to 250 maintenance workers to fill a need created by an increased workload in the coming year. The expansion begins this month and will continue through 2008. The move will affect employment numbers at Kansas City International Airport, in Tulsa, Okla., and Fort Worth, Texas.
The passenger count at KCI rose 7.7 percent in November to 950,308 compared with 882,389 in the same month last year. December boardings increased 9.3 percent to 495,151, up from 452,865 a year ago. For the year-to-date, boardings at KCI nearly reached 5.4 million, which represents an 8.6 percent from the same period in 2006. More
The Aviation Department signed a 60-year lease with KC Expo LLC for a 200-acre tract near KCI to construct ITEC Expo. ITEC Expo will provide heavy equipment manufacturers with an international destination where they can exhibit, demonstrate, market and sell their products. The ITEC Expo, which will conduct market, consumer and competitive research, will provide support for dealers, distributors and wholesalers.
The development also will include a 262,500 square-foot, arena-style special events center, a 60,000 square-foot truck and accessory expo building, a 258,000 square-foot agriculture building, a 200,000 square-foot heavy equipment and machinery building and facilities for meetings.
City partners to launch “Green Playbook”
The City has partnered with the City of Seattle, the U.S. Green Building Council and more than 20 other organizations to create the “Green Playbook,” a Web-based resource outlining environmentally-friendly practices for local governments.
The playbook provides strategies, tips and tools for cities and counties to take immediate action on climate change through green building, green neighborhoods and sustainable infrastructure.
The playbook includes specific advice on:
Assessing local risks and opportunities
Creating an action-oriented planning process for green projects and programs
Building local governments’ capacity for advancing green buildings, neighborhoods and infrastructure
More on the The Playbook for Green Buildings and Neighborhoods.
As always, I appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to e-mail questions and comments to my office at Insight@kcmo.org.
Sincerely,
Wayne A. Cauthen, City Manager
