Farewell to Kansas City legend Buck O'Neil
We mourn the loss of a truly amazing man and resident of our city. Buck O'Neil was a selfless man who gave tirelessly to baseball, the Negro Leagues, youth and Kansas City. As Kansas City's goodwill ambassador, his dedication and promotion of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum brought national recognition to the museum, the 18th and Vine area and to Kansas City. Watch the memorial service held Oct. 14 at Municipal Auditorium.

  • His legacy will live on with the Buck O’Neil Education and Research Center. The center will be part of an expansion of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum to be built at the historic Paseo YMCA. The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum has launched the Thanks a Million Buck campaign to raise funds for the project.

A Million Lights aims to save money, help environment
We are the first city in the nation to proclaim a goal of “A Million Lights” as part of the national ENERGY STAR® campaign to help consumers save money and energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. If everyone in the city switches from standard incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent lights, we can save more than $20 million in energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions about 440 million pounds.

Get a $2 rebate from Kansas City Power & Light per qualified ENERGY STAR® lights purchased at Missouri locations of Ace Hardware and HyVee grocery stores through the end of the year.

    American Royal offers more events
Help the American Royal celebrate its 107th year during the two-month event. The American Royal is one of Kansas City’s premiere fall festivals with concerts, livestock exhibitions, professional rodeos, horse shows and barbecue.

New ordinance improves construction project delivery
In the City’s ongoing quest to improve the way capital improvement projects are completed and delivered, the City Council adopted a new ordinance allowing the use of alternative construction delivery methods. The benefits to alternative construction delivery methods such as design-build include expediting construction projects more efficiently, saving time and money, and providing more partnership opportunities for smaller companies. Learn more about construction contract administration.

As always, I appreciate your feedback as a citizen. Please feel free to e-mail questions and comments to my office at Insight@kcmo.org.

    Sincerely,
    Wayne A. Cauthen, City Manager
