Dear resident:
Welcome to another edition of my monthly e-message about how the City is working for you.
New mayor, council begin May 1
I look forward to working with the new mayor and council as we strive to continue improving City services, repairing public infrastructure and addressing the needs of our neighborhoods. Mayor-elect Mark Funkhouser';s many years of experience in City government will be an asset to the Mayor's Office. The inauguration will be held May 1, with the public celebration at Union Station on May 4. Watch the swearing-in ceremony live on City government channel KCCG-TV2 at 9:30 a.m. on May 1. Residents who want to attend the ball should contact the incoming mayor or councilmembers at (816) 513-3500 or (816) 513-1368.
Neighborhood Improvement Program conference to promote community
The NIP/NOW conference provides opportunities to learn best practices for neighborhood improvement for select neighborhoods. The conference, to be held May 5, will feature a variety of workshops to help build a sense of community and improve neighborhood safety and curbside appeal. The Neighborhood Improvement Program is designed to improve the physical conditions and livability of declining areas. More about the program and what it's doing for neighborhoods.

City signs contract for sale of Richards-Gebaur
Last week, the City signed preliminary contracts with CenterPoint Realty Services Corp. taking the first step toward the $10.6 million sale of the former Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base. These contracts prompt payment from CenterPoint to begin environmental cleanup of the site. The Chicago-based company plans redevelop the former military airfield into an intermodal rail and trucking inland port. The "International Freight Gateway at Richards-Gebaur" will recruit manufacturing, warehousing and shipping tenants who want to take advantage of Kansas City's central location between Canada and Mexico for trade and commerce.
Climate Protection Plan makes progress
The Kansas City Climate Protection Plan Steering Committee gave its first progress report to the mayor and councilmembers earlier this month. The City Council unanimously passed a resolution adopting four recommendations:
- Adopt a policy that makes climate protection and greenhouse gas reductions a key factor in all decisions and actions by the City
- Adopt a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from City government operations by 30 percent
- Adopt the Phase 1 greenhouse gas reduction measures from the Progress Report
- Support the continuation of the climate protection planning process.
As always, I appreciate your feedback as a citizen. Please feel free to e-mail questions and comments to my office at Insight@kcmo.org.
Sincerely,
Wayne A. Cauthen, City Manager
