Voters to decide on three questions April 8
On Tuesday, April 8, residents will have the opportunity to decide on three questions that impact the City: the 3/8-cent bus tax, short-term loan establishment fee and the smoking ordinance. Find out more about the issues. For results on election night, you can tune in after 8 p.m. to KCCG-TV2 or go online to www.kcmo.org.
Big 12 Championships bring fans to Kansas City
The City welcomed the 2008 Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's and Women's Basketball Championships to the Sprint Center and Municipal Auditorium on March 11-16. Residents and visitors not only enjoyed great basketball, but also activities and dining during the tournaments throughout the City and at the recently opened Power & Light District, including a giant screen where people gathered and viewed the games in the canopy-covered courtyard. We look forward to continue to host prestigious events such as the Big 12 Championships in the world-class Sprint Center that will continue to bring visitors and residents to our city. Watch a video
Power & Light District opens
The mayor, Cordish Co., City officials and I were among those who officially kicked off the opening of the Power & Light District earlier this month with fireworks and a performance by recording artist Pat McGee. Having a thriving downtown is important to the success of any City and seeing the Power & Light District come to life is truly exciting. Even though the district is open for business, construction is still ongoing in the new additions. I encourage you to experience the many offerings – restaurants, activities, nightlife and entertainment – this area has to offer. Find more about the district and downtown's offerings in the Downtown KC Resource Guide.
City streets improve, according to new report
According to a report by The Road Information Program, the City is no longer one of the 20 urban areas with the most substandard pavement. In fact, the program found that our roads are improving faster than those in other parts of the country. Three years ago, the City ranked No. 1 for bad pavement, so to move out of that dubious distinction is something we're taking seriously. If you encounter potholes, please report them to the 3-1-1 Action Center online or by calling 311 or (816) 513-1313.
City formally enacts Green Solutions policy
Last month, I signed an administrative regulation to implement the City Council’s Green Solutions Policy Resolution. The administrative regulation directs City departments to incorporate green solutions into City policies, projects and programs, including rain gardens, bio-retention facilities and stream buffers. The original resolution passed Aug. 9, 2007, and work was done over the past six months to develop the implementation plan to ensure efficient adoption across City departments. More
Bartle Hall ballroom receives green building council’s silver rating
The Kansas City Convention Center’s new ballroom received the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver certification, the third highest distinction. The Capital Improvements Management Office managed the $150 million project, which included several innovative “green” solutions that make the 46,000-square-foot ballroom environmentally friendly and energy efficient.
