City manager submits proposed budget to council
The proposed 2007-2008 fiscal year budget was submitted to the City Council last week. The budget focuses on improving neighborhoods, providing more funding for capital maintenance, increasing youth programs and strengthening crime prevention. Find out more and read the proposed budget.
New airline service begins at KCI airport
ExpressJet Airlines is now selling tickets for nonstop service from Kansas City International Airport to Austin, Texas, New Orleans, Raleigh-Durham, N.C., Louisville, Ky., Los Angeles/Ontario, Tucson, Ariz., and Jacksonville, Fla. ExpressJet service also will offer an improved customer experience with valet carry-on bag service and complimentary snacks with full meal service options. With ExpressJet's arrival, Kansas City now offers service to 64 nonstop destinations, including 44 of the top 50 destinations. Learn more about the new service.
Automated water meters to help improve service
The Water Services Department is launching a program to automate its meter reading system over the next three years to help improve service for residents. The automated system will help the City be more accurate reading meters and efficient as they help identify unusual spikes in customer water usage. Read about the new meters.
Tax Amnesty Program starts March 1
Most taxpayers do pay their taxes on time, but some individuals and businesses are unable to meet their tax obligations in a timely manner. The Tax Amnesty Program allows taxpayers to pay only the tax due on eligible outstanding bills and delinquent returns – the penalties, interest, fees and the City's right to pursue criminal or civil charges will be waived. The program runs March 1 to April 16. More about the program.
City leads area with new home construction
For the fifth straight year, Kansas City, Mo., led the metropolitan area in 2006 in new home construction with 2,033 units out of a total for the area of 6,048. Olathe was second with 849.
CIMO celebrates third anniversary
The Capital Improvements Management Office celebrated its third anniversary and first year of operation under the guidance of City staff. CIMO was devised to be a centralized and consolidated capital improvements office to address an existing backlog of capital projects while also making improvements to the City's delivery system and taking on new capital projects.
CIMO currently is responsible for managing a portfolio of 233 active capital projects valued at more than $960 million. These projects include the Music Hall renovation, the St. John Corridor streetscape improvements, 69 traffic signal upgrades, and more than 50 storm and sanitary sewer improvements.
