Plug-in download information

Our Web site strives to make navigation easy and to help you find information quickly. If you are having trouble and this page doesn't answer your questions, please feel free to send us an e-mail.

Navigation
The City's home page is divided into three major navigational sections: the navigation bar, left-side link menu and right-side link menu.

The navigation bar, which runs horizontally across the top of the page, contains frequently requested information such as city job listings, e-services like online transactions and interactive forms, and information on how to contact City departments. Each major link provides a drop-down menu that consists of additional links pertaining to that category or subject. Nearly every page on the Web site contains the navigation bar.

The left-side link menu contains the Site Directory and other useful links. The Site Directory works like a table of contents. It is an alphabetical list of links to frequently used resources at this site. Other links on the left-side menu point to such things as frequently-sought city services, an alphabetized directory of departments, and the full text of all city ordinances. The links found on the left-side home page menu appear on interior pages in the form of a footer, located at the bottom of each page.

The right-side link menu, like the left-side menu, provides links to frequently sought information. As with the left-side menu, links in the right-side home page menu appear on interior pages in the form of a footer, located at the bottom of each page.

Plug-Ins
The City Web site contains files of various types that require a plug-in. A plug-in is a software program that enables you to view and in some cases print certain file types, such as Abobe Acrobat and RealMedia files. A plug-in works like an addition to your Web browser program. If you click on a link to a file requiring a plug-in, and the file fails to display on your screen or gives you an error message, then most likely you don't have the plug-in installed on your PC. Luckily, most plug-ins are free and can be readily downloaded from the Internet. The links below will take you to Web sites offering the free plug-ins you may need for our site:

  • Adobe Acrobat files: Also known as PDF (portable document format) files because of their .pdf file extension, these files are the most numerous on the city's web site that require a plug-in. In order to view or print PDF files, you must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in installed on your PC.
If you are using a text-only browser or any screen reader software, you can convert PDF image files to text by using the Adobe PDF Converter.

  • RealMedia files: These files contain live or pre-recorded video and audio clips that you can download from the Internet and play on your PC. In order to view these files, you must have the RealPlayer plug-in, which is available at http://www.real.com. (The free plug-in link is on the bottom of the page.)

  • Flash/Shockwave files: These files contain vector-based animation that you can interact with. In order to view these files, you must have the Flash Player plug-in, available at http://www.macromedia.com

  • Autodesk files: The City Web site contains links to a number of dynamic maps -- maps that are created and displayed "on the fly" from stored computer data when you click on the links. In order to view these maps, you must download and install an Autodesk plug-in for your browser. The plug-in works with Netscape Version 3 and later and Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 4 and later. After you download the plug-in, close your browser, navigate to the directory where you stored the downloaded file, and double-click the file to install the plug-in.
