|Determine your business entity and name your business|
There are many legal structures your business may choose to operate under in the state of Missouri, including sole proprietorship, general partnership, limited partnership, limited liability company and corporation. For more information, visit the Missouri Secretary of State's Small Business Advocacy Center. For a full listing and explanation of business entities available to business owners, click here.
The name of your business must be unique from any other business entity registered with the state of Missouri. The availability of a corporate name may be checked online, or by contacting the Missouri Secretary of State's Kansas City Branch (telephone name searches are only preliminary and do not guarantee the availability of the name). Upon reserving a name in writing and receiving confirmation of that reservation, that name may be used in forming the business.
