THE PULSE was a survey undertaken to establish a baseline of selected health and social measures relevant to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community in the bi-state metropolitan area of Kansas City, Missouri.

Traditionally, there has been little research regarding public health and the LGBT community outside of mental health issues and HIV/AIDS.

While this survey was the second comprehensive LGBT community assessment conducted in the nation, it was unique in that it was a result of a partnership forged between a local public health agency, the Kansas City, Mo., Health Department, and the LGBT community, represented by the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of Greater Kansas City.

A follow-up survey, Check the Pulse, was developed and implemented by the Health Department and the Lesbian and Gay Community Center of Greater Kansas City in 2006. The results of this survey may be found above.
