Follow up of lead poisoned children is a very important aspect of the work done by nurses at the Kansas City Health Department. If a child has been found to have an elevated blood lead level of 10-14mcg/dL, the nurse works closely with the family to teach them and their child how to prevent further lead poisoning. The nurse will try to help the family determine how the lead exposure occured and also suggest ways to eliminate or lessen the lead contamination. These children need to be tested every three months to monitor their lead levels. Letters are sent and phone calls are made to families when follow up and educational support are needed.

The Lead Programs' nurse case managers provide follow up services to children with lead levels at or above 15mcg. The children and their families receive personalized, family centered care until the child's lead level falls within acceptable limits. Interventions consist of home visits, phone calls, and follow up blood lead tests as well as education and consultation with other members of the child's health care team.
