    Food Code Training Classes

Food safety education is a key element of the Food Protection and Food Handler Training Programs.

The Food and Drug Administration's 1999 Food Code was adopted in 2001, with modifications, as the "Kansas City Missouri Food Code."  The new code replaces the "Food Service Sanitation Ordinance of Kansas City, Mo.," which was based on the FDA's 1976 Food Code. The Program offers both a Food Handlers training class for food workers and a Food Safety Manager's class for owners and managers of food establishments.

These classes are designed to provide information necessary for restaurant personnel to operate their food establishments in compliance with the Food Code and Sewer Use Ordinance.

    Class topics include:

    • No bare-hand contact with ready-to-eat foods
    • Demonstration of knowledge
    • Assignment of responsibility
    • Restriction or exclusion of ill food workers
    • Ready-to-eat food dating
    • Consumer advisory
    • Cold holding
    • Scoreless inspection report
    • Pasteurized eggs, certain recipes
    • Time as a public health control
    • Best management practices for fats, oils and greases

A test is given at the conclusion of the class, and those who score 70 percent or better on the exam will receive either a Food Handler card or a Food Manager card, which are valid for three years. Food Managers will also receive a certificate of completion.

If you score less than 70 percent, you may retest at a later date free of charge. Please call and schedule a time to retake the exam.

    For both classes

Please call (816) 513-6015 for further information or register online. All classes must be pre-registered at least 48 hours in advance, and you must receive confirmation, either by e-mail or from speaking to a Health Department staff member directly, of your registration to attend the class.

Check-in begins 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the class. Classes begin promptly at the times listed on the schedules. Please be on time; late arrivals will need to reschedule to attend class at a future date.

The Food Handler course cost is $20, and the Food Manager course cost is $30. The fee for the course must be paid prior to attending the class. Payment must be made by cash, check or money order only. Make checks payable to the City Treasurer. If you are paying in cash, please bring the exact amount; we are unable to change large bills.

Classes are held at the Health Department on the Lower Level, in Biery Auditorium unless otherwise noted. When you arrive at the Health Department, please park your car in the South parking lot. Upon entering the building, go to the security desk and tell them you are here for the Food Code class.
