The City of Kansas City, Mo., collects a 1 percent earnings tax on all wages earned in the City. While most employers withhold the earnings tax for their employees, all residents who live and/or work in the city limits are responsible for the earnings tax.

What is the earnings tax?
The earnings tax is a 1 percent tax on an individual’s earned income such as salaries, wages, commissions, tips and other compensation.
Who has to file and/or pay earnings tax?
All Kansas City, Mo., residents are required to pay the earnings tax, even if they work outside of the city. Non-residents are required to pay the earnings tax on income earned within Kansas City, Mo., city limits.
How do I know if I owe?
To determine if you may be liable, please check your W-2 for local tax withheld or contact your employer. If you currently have an outstanding bill with the City, please refer to the contact representative or contact Taxpayer Services at (816) 513-1120.
What if my employer did not withhold for me?
Employees who are not withheld by their employer, and live and/or work in the city limits are responsible for paying Earnings tax despite their employer having not withheld it on their behalf. Please refer to your W-2 or contact your employer to determine your withholding status. If you determine that you have not been withheld by your employer and your employer is located within the Kansas City, Mo., city limits, please contact Taxpayer Services at (816) 513-1120.
How do I file?
Filing is easy! You can now file online, complete your return with fill-in forms or by mail.
When is my annual tax return due?
Annual returns are due April 15 each year.

Yes. File and pay your taxes online.
What do I need to know before I fill out my return?
W-2's and any supporting documentation must accompany all returns.
Non-resident taxpayers are required to obtain their employer's signature when completing the RD-109NR, along with supporting documentation.
You do NOT have to file a return, if you are fully withheld by your employer. Please check your W-2 or contact your employer.
Which annual return is right for me?
Wage Earner Return for Earnings Tax (RD-109) is the required form for individual taxpayers.
Non-residents are required to complete a Wage Earner Non-Resident Return (RD-109NR) along with a Wage Earner Return (RD-109), W-2's and any supporting documentation.
All forms are to be completed fully along with W-2's and any supporting documentation.
