    What if my business had no activity this year?
    You may file electronically or complete your business return along with all supporting documentation and mail it to us at the address on the form.

    What if my business closed this year?
    To close your City tax account, you can do one of the following:

    • Check the appropriate box on your tax return, and mail it back to us.
    • Complete a taxpayer information form and mail or fax it back to us.

    What do I need to know before I fill out my annual profit return?              
    Profits Return (RD-108). All forms are to be completed fully along with Schedule C, Y, Z (RD-108A) and any supporting documentation.

    • Schedule C, Y, Z (RD-108A) is required for all profit returns (RD-108) along with supporting documentation.
    • If your business had no activity for the year, you are still required to file a profit return along with all supporting documentation.
    • All returns are due April 15, unless your business's annual accounting period is on a fiscal year basis, in which case it is to be filed 105 days from the end of their fiscal year.
    Who is required to get a business license?
    A business operating in the city must obtain an occupational license.  This requirement applies to business entities regardless of their size or composition: corporation, partnership, association, company, individual or any other type of business arrangement.  A few professions, which are licensed by the state, most notably doctors, dentists, and lawyers, do not required occupation licenses.  To verify if you need a business/occupational license, contact the Business License section at (816) 513-1135.   

     What is the business license fee?     
    The cost of a license varies by type of business.  When first obtaining a license, new businesses are required to register the business, file the appropriate return prior to operating and pay an initial fee.  This fee will be prorated based on the number of months remaining in the year.  The fee for subsequent years is due at the time of license renewal; and is often based on the business' gross receipts during the previous year of operation.                             

    How and when do I file? 
    Business license renewal fees are due February 28 each year (or anytime prior) for businesses operating within the previous year.  Business license forms can be obtain online, click here.

    What documentation do I need to obtain a business license?   
    Businesses operating in the city may be required to provide additional documentation depending upon the type of business.  Business taxpayers and tax preparers are encouraged to obtain all supporting documentation before submitting renewal information.  This allows for more prompt service and efficient processing.   

    What form(s) do I need for my business license?

    Existing businesses: All forms are to be completed fully along with Prior Year Business License-Adjust Return (RD-104), all required clearances and any supporting documentation.

    New businesses: The preliminary business license fee due on forms RD-101 and RD-102 ar based on estimated gross receipts for the current year. Businesses operating less than 12 months and whose license fees are based on a flat rate (form RD-103), may prorate fee over $5 (if applicable).

    What if I am a non-resident who owns a business in Kansas City, MO.?
    Non-resident businesses are subject to local Kansas City, Mo. taxes. The City collects and administers a number of taxes. To determine if your business is responsible for collecting and /or paying local City taxes to the City of Kansas City, MO, please contact Taxpayer Services at (816) 513-1120.

    How do I change my address?
    Please complete a taxpayer information form and mail, fax or bring to the address on the top of the form. 

    Can I make payment arrangements?
    There are some situations in which taxpayers can establish payment agreements.  For more information about payment agreements, please contact Taxpayer Services at (816) 513-1120.

    What's the status of my refund?

    What type of documentation do I need for my refund request?
    The type of required documentation varies from one taxpayer to another. To determine what type of supporting documentation may be required, please contact Taxpayer Services at (816) 513-1120.

    How can I open new accounts or add additional accounts for my business?
    If you need to open a new tax account or add additional tax accounts, please contact Taxpayer Services at (816) 513-1120 and speak with one our representatives.

    What is a Community Improvement District (CID) and what are the rates?
    A CID is a community improvement initiative created by property owners which reside within the district and raise taxes to support capital improvements within the district subject to council approval. The district must be supported by 50 percent of property owners. The rates vary depending on the location of the district.

    What is the difference between a Community Improvement District and a Transportation Development District?
    While both collect and administer taxes for their respective district, Transportation Development Districts are created to provide capital for public works projects such as roads, bridges and transportation systems. Community Improvement Districts raise taxes for virtually any capital improvement.
