Grand opening
held
for Fire Station 19
A symbolic uncoupling of fire
hoses was held Friday, October 27, in lieu of a traditional
ribbon-cutting
ceremony at Fire Station No. 19, 550
W. 43rd St. The event celebrated
the City’s
continued success in fulfilling an overwhelming mandate by citizens to
repair,
upgrade and build new public safety facilities
The event began with the Fire
Department’s Honor Guard posting the colors and then leading
the Pledge of
Allegiance. Following this, brief remarks and the uncoupling ceremony
were
performed by representatives from the Fire Department, elected
officials and
City staff, specifically; Councilmembers Jim Glover and Becky Nace;
IAFF Local
42 President, Louie Wright; Local 3808 Representative, Lew Hendricks;
KCFD Fire
Chief, Richard “Smokey” Dyer.
The media and others in
attendance were then provided tours of the new facility which replaced
the
original Fire Station No. 19 at 4012 Washington St.
and Fire Station No. 32 at 4928 Main St.
The service area for this facility now spans the Plaza and Westport
area.
Construction of the approximately
$6.4 million project began in September 2005 and Fire Department
personnel
moved into the station in September 2006. Funding for the project came
completely from the quarter-cent sales tax for operation of the Fire
Department
that includes capital improvements, which Kansas City
voters passed in August 2001.
The Capital Improvements
Management Office managed the completion of this project using the
City's
design-build process. This process uses a single contractor to manage
the
design and construction phases of project to shorten the length of bid
time and
expedite project completion. The station was designed by Shaughnessy,
Fickel
and Scott Architects and constructed by J.E. Dunn Construction Company.
The building is a two-story
structure with apparatus space for two pumpers, a 100-foot aerial
ladder unit
and an incident command post vehicle. Designed as a one-stop location
where
fire companies can refill supplies such as fuel, air and oxygen, the
station
will be used as a training facility for Battalion 106.
The facility includes offices and
housing for one battalion chief and three fire companies, kitchen, day
room,
lobby, public restroom, three fire offices, laundry space and locker
rooms, air
storage, clean wash and EMS
storage, and a training room and physical fitness area.
