On May 27, at 10 a.m. officials
from the City of Kansas City, Mo., Kansas City River Trails Inc., and
the Port Authority of Kansas City participated in a groundbreaking
event at River Bluff Park. Work on the downtown riverfront continues in
preparation for the July 3-4 Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemoration
at Richard L. Berkley Riverfront
Park.
Mayor Kay Barnes spoke
at the event about this project’s importance as part of the
Riverfront Heritage Trail and the City’s progress in
completing capital improvement projects to enhance Kansas
City’s livability. Councilwoman Bonnie Sue Cooper spoke on
the subject of how improvements
to this area and all along the trail help create a better environment
for those living and working in this area of the city.
Amenities like this help to attract businesses and tourists to this
vital area that is part of Kansas City's history. The
trail is a 10-mile, bi-state system of riverfront and urban bicycle and
pedestrian pathways that will be the hub of the many existing and
planned pedestrian/bicycle trails.
In early May, work
began at River Bluff Park to create a small park overlooking the West
Bottoms and the Missouri and Kansas rivers along the Riverfront
Heritage Trail route.
This project will
include the formation of an overlook park the Riverfront Heritage
Trail, as well as street improvements to Beardsley Street.
This project will
extend the trail through River Bluff Park overlooking the river valley,
and will accommodate a pedestrian bridge to the West Bottoms. The
Capital Improvements Management Office has worked expeditiously to
complete this project before the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial
Commemoration.
