Public Art Frequently Asked Questions

Where Does The Money Come From For Public Art?

  • More than 350 state, city, county, transit, and airport sponsored public art programs operate in the United States.  Some city ordinances allocate a percentage (usually one to three percent) of the budgets of eligible capital construction projects for public art.  Kansas City’s One Percent for Public Art ordinance was passed by the City Council in 1986.  It mandates that one percent of the estimated cost of improvement for new or renovated municipal buildings be set aside for the aesthetic adornment of public buildings and property.
