Housing and community development plan applications ready Wednesday, October 22, 2003
Applications are being accepted for the 2004-2008 Consolidated Housing and Community Development Plan until Nov. 21. Strategic partnership benefits City and UMKC Monday, October 13, 2003

Amnesty program begins Saturday Wednesday, October 8, 2003
Outstanding municipal warrants eligible for the City’s upcoming Municipal Court amnesty program now are posted on the City’s Web site, http://www.kcmo.org. By inputting their names and birthdates, citizens may obtain information about eligible outstanding warrants. A recorded message explaining the details of the program also is available at (816) 513-3240. Citizens may call this number on the days of the amnesty program with questions about their cases or eligibility for the amnesty.

Performance audit on animal control released Tuesday, October 7, 2003
Today, the City Auditor’s Office released a report on animal control. The report concluded that compliance with pet licensing was low. Only about 8 percent of dogs and 1 percent of cats in the city were licensed in 2002. While low licensing rates are a common problem in municipalities, a more proactive approach could increase licensing. Licensing provides a means of tracing stray pets back to their owners; lack of compliance with licensing requirements increases the likelihood of a stray pet being euthanized. Almost 70 percent of the animals brought to the City’s animal shelter in 2002 were euthanized.

The Department of Housing and Community Development unveiled a new Web-based monitoring tool today at the Neighborhood Development and Housing Committee meeting. This Web-based monitoring tool tracks all housing production projects, housing rehabilitation projects, and economic development initiatives, all of which are related to the department’s projects and developments.

Flood warning system greatly improved since 1998 flood Wednesday, October 1, 2003
On the five-year anniversary of the deadly Oct. 4, 1998, flash flood, City officials cite numerous major improvements that have been made to the City’s flood warning system including a flash flood plan and barricading procedures now in place and well-tested.

Performance audit on controls over TIF expenditures released Tuesday, September 30, 2003
Today, the City Auditor’s Office released a report on controls over tax increment financing expenditures. The purpose of TIF is to reduce or eliminate adverse conditions in an area and to enhance the tax base by encouraging real estate development and redevelopment.

Contract Oversight Committee to reduce costs by more than $750,000 Tuesday, September 30, 2003
The Contract Oversight Committee has identified several areas for cost reductions and is currently implementing improvements estimated to save more than $750,000, or 57 percent of previous expenditures. This includes a savings of more than $500,000 for General Fund supported expenditures. The cost reductions include policy improvements in personnel advertising, contract and bid advertising, and construction document printing and distribution.
