Shelter opens at 7:30 p.m. for July 11 storm victims Monday, July 12, 2010
The City of Kansas City, Mo. and the Kansas City Chapter of the American Red Cross announce the opening of an emergency shelter for victims of the July 11 storm in Kansas City, Mo. The Hillcrest Community Center at 10401 Hillcrest Rd. has been designated as the emergency shelter. The American Red Cross will be operating the shelter which opens at 7:30 p.m.

City expands storm damage cleanup options Monday, July 12, 2010
In response to the extensive woody debris generated by a storm on Sunday, July 11, the City of Kansas City, Mo. announced the City’s Leaf and Brush Drop-Off center, located just south of I-470 on Raytown Rd., will be open to residents between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 13 through Sunday, July 18.

Storm damage being assessed, caution still needed Monday, July 12, 2010
The City of Kansas City, Missouri’s Mayor Mark Funkhouser held a news conference on Sunday, July 11 at 2:45 p.m. in Clark Ketterman Park, 8100 East 107th Street to discuss the extent of the storm damage reported. The City has estimated a loss of over 1,000 trees and is still assessing damage, but would caution residents to stay clear of downed powerlines (report to: 1-888-LIGHTKC (1-888-544-4852)), water in roadways and downed trees or limbs, especially on structures which might become unstable. It may take a few weeks for the City to fully assess the destruction the storm has caused.

City employees recognized for procurement credentials Friday, July 2, 2010
Three employees of the City of Kansas City, Mo. General Services Department’s Procurement Services Division have been recognized for earning professional credentials in their field. In May, Assistant Procurement Manager Renee Haskin completed the examination to be recognized as a Certified Public Purchasing Officer (CPPO), and Senior Buyers Karen Wang and Keely Golden successfully completed examinations to be recognized as Certified Professional Public Buyers (CPPBs).

City and KCP&L develop paperless green process Thursday, July 1, 2010
The City of Kansas City, Mo. General Services Department and Kansas City Power and Light (KCP&L) successfully transitioned the City’s electric utility billing to a paperless billing process. This environmentally friendly transition will result in a reduction in overhead and human resource costs associated with the handling and storage of more than 15,000 documents annually.

Residents advised about wastewater spill in Blue River Tuesday, June 29, 2010
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources report that a bypass at the Blue River Wastewater Treatment Plant discharged an estimated 2 million gallons of wastewater into the Blue River near the confluence with the Missouri River on June 27 at 12:45 am. The overflow was caused by a power outage at the secondary treatment facility. The bypass ended at 2:05 am. The City’s drinking water supply is not affected by this discharge.

Residents advised about wastewater overflow in unnamed creek Tuesday, June 29, 2010
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources report an 18-inch sewer overflow was discharging sewage into an unnamed creek that leads to the Blue River near 7714 Prospect. The discharge was discovered at 5 pm on June 25 and due to a miscommunication field crews were not notified until 10:30 am on June 28th. The City’s drinking water supply was not affected by this break.

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources report that a 18-inch sewer line break in an unnamed creek that leads to the Blue River near Oldham Road and Oakwood Road in Swope Park discharged an estimated 81,000 gallons of sewage on June 22nd. The City’s drinking water supply was not affected by this break.
