FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Dec. 8, 2011

Crews transfer traffic onto new Waukomis roundabout

The City of Kansas City, Mo., is advising residents that the next phase of construction will begin Thursday, Dec. 15 on Northwest Waukomis Drive.

As part of planned construction on Northwest 72nd Street and Northwest Waukomis Drive, City crews will reopen the newly-finished Northwest 72nd Street extension from Northwest Waukomis Drive to North Polk Avenue. Existing traffic on Northwest Waukomis Drive and North Green Hills Road will be diverted to a new roundabout, and Northwest 72nd Street east of the roundabout will be detoured to North Robinhood Lane and Northwest 70th Terrace.

“We are extremely excited to see work moving forward on schedule on North Waukomis,” said Second District Councilman at large Ed Ford. “Although they’ve faced some inconvenience during this construction, drivers in the Second District will now get an early look at one of the City’s newest and safest roadways.”

Work will continue through winter on the $9 million roadway project, which started construction in April 2011. The extensive road improvement project will extend Northwest 72nd Street from North Polk Avenue to Northwest Waukomis Drive and reconstruct Northwest Waukomis Drive from Northwest Bryan Avenue to Northwest 72nd Street. In addition, North Green Hills Road will be reconstructed from Northwest 72nd Street to Northwest Platte Brooke Drive as a secondary arterial, adding storm sewer improvements and other enhancements to the roadway.

“Eight years ago, the assumption was that 72nd Street would never be connected due to the difficulty of the terrain in the area,” said Second District Councilman Russ Johnson. “Thanks to the hard work of City staff and our citizens’ dedication to the PIAC process, we’ve overcome those difficulties to provide the safe, modern roadway that our citizens deserve.”

Work on this project is scheduled for completion in summer 2013. The Capital Projects Department managed the design and construction of this project for the City’s Public Works Department.

Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this project should be directed to Sean Demory, Capital Projects Department, at 816-513-0059 or email sean.demory@kcmo.org.
