Health Department hosts World AIDS Day clinic

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will commemorate World AIDS Day on Thursday, Dec. 1 with a walk-in, free, confidential 20-minute HIV testing clinic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in a screened area of the Health Department’s atrium, 2400 Troost Ave. Free, confidential testing for gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis will also be offered.

“Knowing your HIV status is as important as knowing your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar levels, which are all treatable,” said Samantha Hughes, manager of the Office of HIV Prevention and Planning Council Support. “Get tested, and see your doctor if you have a positive HIV test result.”

This year marks 30 years since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention first published a scientific account of what would become known as the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. There are currently approximately 4,377 people living with HIV or AIDS in the 11-county area, and as of the end of 2009 there were approximately 33.3 million people worldwide living with the infection.

Free testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases is regularly available at the Health Department on Mondays through Fridays. Clients without known exposure or symptoms who just want to be tested can walk in during regular clinic hours, from 7:45-11:30 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and from 7:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays. Registration closes at 12:30 p.m. on Thursdays.

Those with symptoms or a known exposure, who will need a more thorough examination and treatment, must schedule an appointment by calling 816-513-6379.
