City and MAST pension arbitration complete

The City of Kansas City, Mo., has announced that arbitration has resulted in a finding that is consistent with the City’s position that the supplemental pension supplied by the City for former MAST employees complied with the collective bargaining agreement requirements, and there was no violation of the collective bargaining agreement.

“I am pleased with the arbiter’s ruling and thank the City’s Law Department and city manager for their work to secure the decision. In the end, we believed that our offer was fair and the arbiter agreed with the Council. It represents a significant savings to the City that will be used to make our ambulance service even better,” said Mayor Sly James.

The arbitration between the City and Local 42 resolved the question of whether a provision valued at $30 million that was noted in a side letter was agreed to and binding. Instead, the Council modified the side letter provisions and provided a supplemental pension benefit valued at $15 million. The arbitrator agreed with the City that the side letter was not binding on the City as the Council had not approved it, and the City had followed the collective bargaining agreement when it implemented a supplemental pension benefit.
