City participating in International Walk to School Day

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Active Living KC program has partnered with Dobbs, Ingels and Burke elementary schools from the Hickman Mills C-1 School District to participate in International Walk to School Day on Oct. 4-6. International Walk to School Day is a global event celebrating the many benefits of walking to school.

Parents, neighbors and community leaders are invited to participate in International Walk to School Day events and walk with students at Dobbs Elementary, 9400 Eastern Ave., on Tuesday, Oct. 4 from 8:45-9:15 a.m.; Ingels Elementary, 11600 Food Lane, on Wednesday, Oct. 5 from 7:30-8:25 a.m.; and Burke Elementary, 11115 Bennington Ave., on Thursday, Oct. 6 from 7:30-8:25 a.m.

“We’ll be handing out prizes including slap bracelets, pencils and stickers to participating students, and we’ll have maps available so parents and students know the best and safest walking route to school,” said Ashley Winchell, safer routes manager and organizer of the event.

In addition, the Ruskin High School Marching Band and Drum Line will perform at Dobbs Elementary during the event.

Active Living KC is an initiative encouraging healthy lifestyles by putting regular physical activity back into daily routines and promoting healthy eating habits. Active Living KC was implemented at Ingels Elementary last year, and this year, Dobbs and Burke Elementary were added to the program.

“Having children walk to school with one or more adults is an active, fun and healthy means to get to school,” Winchell said. “By developing safe routes to school and encouraging parents and neighbors to become actively involved in keeping children safe while they walk, this program can really benefit the Hickman Mills community.”
