FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sept. 22, 2011

Residents advised about wastewater overflow into the Blue River Watershed

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department reports a wastewater overflow due to a broken water main.

While performing routine inspection of Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) structures on Sept. 21st, a Water Services Maintenance crew found a manhole near 302 E. 82nd St. bypassing at an estimated rate of 1,000 gallons per minute into an unnamed creek which leads to the Blue River.

Water from a broken 6-inch City water main located in front of 439 E. 79th Terrace was draining into a curb inlet causing the overflow. The bypass was discovered at 11:30 am. The bypass ended at 3:30 pm. Water Crews will repair the broken water main.

For more information, contact Colleen Doctorian, public information officer for the Water Services Department at (816) 513-0232.
