Construction begins on Shoal Creek Trail extension
The City of Kansas City, Mo., has partnered with the City of Gladstone, Mo., to extend the Shoal Creek Trail west from Happy Rock Park (at Northeast 76th Street and North Antioch Road) toward Maple Woods Community College. Construction of this trail includes a new pedestrian and bicycle bridge over Shoal Creek to the east side of Missouri Route 1.
Construction crews will work along Shoal Creek from Missouri Route 1 north to Northeast 82nd Street. The trail will be a 10-feet wide concrete multi-use path, which will connect residents of the area to Maplewoods Community College, Happy Rock Park, transit routes and commercial shopping areas along Route 1.
“Collaboration like this doesn’t happen enough and I applaud both cities’ staffs for not just getting the federal grant, but working together to build something that ignores boundaries.” said First District Councilman Dick Davis. “City cooperation needs to be championed, and this is a great example of it.”
The total construction cost of the project is $961,429. The project is funded with a $636,000 grant from the Federal Highway Administration and is expected to be complete in the spring of 2012. When finished, the Shoal Creek Trail will total seven miles and begin at Pleasant Valley Park and extend to Route 152. An additional extension of the trail north to Barry Road is programmed for late 2012.
“The cooperation between the two cities is something for all Northlanders to be proud of,” said Gladstone City Manager Kirk Davis. “Happy Rock is the central trailhead for this regional trail, and the trail gives athletic event spectators and other park visitors another park experience.”
In addition to the cities of Kansas City and Gladstone Mo., the project was
supported by Maplewoods Community College and Star Development Corporation, which granted the easements for the trail and access to construct it.
