City to kick off Bike Week on Monday, May 16
Bronze Bike Friendly Community award to be presented
The City of Kansas City, Mo., will kick off Greater Kansas City Bike Week 2011 on Monday, May 16 at 8 a.m. with an outdoor event held on the south side of City Hall, 414 E. 12th St. All are invited to attend and help celebrate the City’s recognition as a Bronze level Bike Friendly Community by The League of American Bicyclists and learn of the City’s continuing commitment to attain a Platinum designation by the year 2020.
On behalf of the League of American Bicyclists, Brett Hugh will present the Bronze designation award to the City and will be followed by remarks from Mayor Sly James, Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Circo and key bicycle advocates and City staff.
The City encourages residents of the Greater Kansas City region to participate in Greater Kansas City Bike Week 2011, which is from May 16-20. City staff, community organizations and advocacy groups have collaborated on a variety of activities that promote the use of the bicycle and walking as effective alternatives for transportation, in addition to health and recreational purposes.
Bike Week is a regional effort involving local governments, area bicycle clubs and advocacy groups, planning agencies and bike-friendly businesses.
