Parks and Rec named a finalist for National Gold Medal Award
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Parks and Recreation Department received recognition as a National Gold Medal Award finalist by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).
Kansas City's Parks and Recreation Department was one of only four communities to receive this prestigious designation within the “Class I” category, which included all U.S. parks and recreation departments serving populations of 250,000 or more.
"We are proud to be named a finalist for this very prestigious award," said John Fierro, president of the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners. "It’s exciting for all of us to be considered one of the top parks and recreation agencies in the nation. I particularly want to acknowledge our outstanding staff and dedicated volunteers for their efforts to help our department earn this recognition.”
According to the NRPA, the Gold Medal Awards program honors U.S. communities that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition.
The Gold Medal Awards program separates award candidates into five categories, based on community population. Four finalists are chosen from each category. This year’s finalists will compete for the Grand Plaque Award honors this summer, which will be announced during the NRPA’s Annual Congress & Exposition in Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 1-3, 2011.
The other Class I finalists included Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation Department (N.C.); Miami-Dade County Park and Recreation Department (Fla.); and Portland Parks and Recreation (Ore.).
