Tickets still available for City Celebration and Appreciation Picnic on May 7
The City of Kansas City, Mo., held the Ceremonial Inauguration for its 56th Mayor, Sly James, and City Council members today, May 2, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. The event, which had a standing-room-only crowd, took place in the City Council Chambers on the 26th floor of City Hall. During the inauguration, Mayor James delivered his inaugural address, outlining his vision for the City’s future. A public reception followed.
On Sunday, May 1 at 2 p.m., a non-ceremonious swearing in of Mayor James and the City Council took place at City Hall in the first floor rotunda area.
Mayor James will host the City Celebration and Appreciation Picnic on Saturday, May 7 from 1-4 p.m. at Starlight Theatre, 4600 Starlight Road, Kansas City, Mo. Residents interested in attending can purchase tickets for $10 through Starlight Theatre at 816-363-7827 or in person at the box office. Attendees must have a ticket for entry into the celebration.
The ticket cost provides a traditional picnic and barbeque for ticketed guests, and the band Full Blast will provide live music from the Starlight stage. In addition, guests to the picnic can bring their picnic ticket to the Kansas City Zoo between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on May 7 for free admission and enjoy the 200 acre lush zoological park and its 1,000 animals.
The overall cost of the inaugural picnic will be less than $50,000, with a majority of the budget underwritten by private donations. An inaugural fund, TogetherKC, has been set up at the Mid America Regional Council (MARC) to collect those contributions.
