FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 18, 2011

Residents advised about wastewater overflow into Brush Creek, Blue River

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department reports two wastewater overflows due to debris in the sewer line.

The first overflow occurred at 51st & Paseo Blvd. and was discovered at 10:55 am and opened at 11:15 am. Debris in the 18- inch sewer line caused the system to backup and overflow through the CSO (combined sewer overflow) grates. The overflow rate was estimated at 5 gpm into Brush Creek.

The second overflow today occurred at 75th & Indiana Ave. was discovered at 3:20 pm and opened 3:50 pm. The cause of the bypass was debris in the sewer system. The overflow rate was estimated at 5 gpm into Blue River.

Samples will be collected from the creek downstream of the spill. Signs have been posted.

The release of untreated sewage from sewer systems, such as this, is known as a sanitary sewer overflow and represents a potential threat to public health and the environment. Most of the overflows occur during wet weather events. However, in this instance, the overflow occurred during a dry weather event due to a debris blockage.
