Construction update on I-435 ramps at 87th Street
The City of Kansas City, Mo., is advising motorists that the final phase of roundabout construction at the interchange of Interstate 435 and 87th Street will begin Monday, April 18.
Beginning April 18, the I-435 ramps at 87th Street currently closed will reopen for standard-sized vehicles only. From April 18-23, the ramp pavements will be widened for larger vehicle use. On Sunday, April 24, the ramps will reopen for semi-tractor trailer trucks and trucks requiring long radius turns.
From April 18-28, the westbound lane of 87th Street will be closed at Hillcrest Road. This short term closure will allow construction of the new westbound lane of 87th Street, which includes raising the roadway by several feet.
Construction started on the 87th Street improvement project in June 2009. The $11 million roadway improvement will realign and widen 87th Street east of Highway 71, adding sidewalks, storm and sanitary sewers and other improvements to the roadway. In addition, roundabouts will be installed at both I-435 intersections, Hillcrest Road and Newton Avenue. The project is scheduled for completion in early summer 2011.
Media inquiries and other requests for more information about the 87th Street construction project should be directed to Sean Demory, communications manager for the Capital Projects Department, 816-513-0059.
