City to build community garden on former jail site

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, March 1 at 10 a.m. for the new Eastwood Hills Community Garden, 8100 Ozark Road. The one-acre, 70-plot garden will reside on the site of the recently demolished Municipal Correctional Institution.

“I am excited about this partnership with Kansas City Community Gardens and the opportunity to bring this wonderful asset for the Eastwood Hills Neighborhood,” said Councilwoman Cindy Circo. “This garden fills a need in the community and provides a great use of the former jail site.”

For a fee, residents will be able to rent garden plots with access to tools and water. All gardeners will be responsible for planting and maintaining their own plots, and all of the produce grown from their garden plot will be theirs to keep. A garden plot will cost $8 for low-income households and $35 for non-low-income households. Households are considered low-income if they have total incomes of 50 percent or less of the median household income for the Kansas City, Mo., area.

Councilman Terry Riley and Councilwoman Cindy Circo will participate in the groundbreaking ceremony, along with other community leaders.
