Mayor proclaims Jan. 30 - Feb. 5 Chinese Week

The City of Kansas City, Mo.’s Mayor Mark Funkhouser has proclaimed the week of Jan. 30 – Feb. 5, 2011 as “Chinese Week” to honor the contributions of Chinese and Chinese American communities to the success of the City of Kansas City, Mo. This celebration coincides with Chinese New Year, which falls on Feb. 3.

"Kansas City and the region have thrived because of the contributions of people of different nationalities, races and ethnicities, and the diverse culture and traditions they have brought," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "Chinese Week is a way to recognize the contributions of Chinese Americans and residents with Chinese ancestors, and to appreciate the culture and traditions they bring to Kansas City."

There are a variety of events residents can attend to celebrate both Chinese Week and the Chinese New Year. For example, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art is hosting a Chinese New Year Celebration with performances and family-friendly activities on Jan. 28 from 5-9 p.m. The Society for Friendship with China is hosting a Chinese New Year Celebration fundraiser at the InterContinental Hotel at the Plaza on Jan. 30 from 5:30-9 p.m. In addition, the “2011 KC Chinese New Year Celebration,” presented by the Kansas City Chinese American Association, the University of Kansas Confucius Institute and the Edgar Snow Memorial Fund, will take place at Johnson Community College on Feb. 5 from 2-9 p.m.
