City, young leaders recognize community contributors

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Office of Civic and Community Engagement is proud to announce the creation of the “Engage KC Leadership Board - Legacy Award.” The board, which is comprised of young local leaders, plans to recognize individuals and organizations that dedicate their resources and time to empowering young people in Kansas City, Mo. Recognitions will take place during the board’s meetings, which are held the second and fourth Monday of every month at 5 p.m. on the 10th floor of City Hall, 414 E. 12th St.

“We hope to recognize extraordinary people at each of our board meetings,” said Manny Abarca, chair of the Engage KC Board. “We also want to encourage others to nominate individuals and organizations that are leaving a legacy in Kansas City.”

"It's long overdue to recognize people and organizations that do so much to empower the future leaders of our community," added Councilman John A. Sharp.

The first recipient of this award is Deborah Mann of the Emmanuel Family and Child Development Center. The board chose Ms. Mann because of her relentless desire to provide diversity training and workshops for Central High School students who attend an after-school program funded by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The Emmanuel Family and Child Development Center also assists economically-challenged families with basic needs, such as groceries and clothing.

"I think this is a wonderful initiative for the Engage KC Leadership Board to acknowledge Kansas Citians for their outstanding contributions to our city," said Mayor Funkhouser. "Deborah Mann is certainly deserving of this honor. Deborah's relentless efforts to help the residents in our community should not go unnoticed."

Nominations may be submitted online at www.kcmo.org/engagekc.

Questions about this award should be directed to Thalia Cherry, Office of Civic and Community Engagement, 816-513-1378.
