City employees receive APWA excellence awards
The American Public Works Association, Kansas City Metro Chapter, has awarded two City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department employees for outstanding service. Greg Bolon, assistant city engineer, received the 2010 Public Works Excellence Award, and Lester Tibbs, area superintendent, received the 2010 Field Supervisor Excellence Award.
"Once again Kansas City employees lead the way in their outstanding work effort, productivity and ingenuity," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "Greg Bolon and Lester Tibbs represent the best of our City employees: managers who are liked and appreciated by their fellow workers, and who lead by example and work just as hard as anyone else. Kansas City is lucky to have them both."
Bolon has diligently served the City of Kansas City, Mo. for 16 years, overseeing three street districts, the bridge program, mowing of right-of-ways and ADA curb snow removal, to name a few.
“Bolon is truly a jack of all trades and wears a different hat depending on the situation he has been placed in,” said Greg Rokos, city engineer. “He never asks staff to do what he wouldn’t do himself and often can be found working alongside them to ensure the job gets done.”
For 33 years, Tibbs has worked his way up the ranks of the City’s Public Works Department and currently supervises full roadway and right-of-way maintenance for incorporated streets in the central section of Kansas City, Mo., which includes Downtown and the Plaza.
“As the economy has tightened, Tibbs has been expected to do more with less,” Rokos said. “He has not only risen to the occasion, but surpassed expectations while meeting the needs of citizens, employees and management.”
Both winners were honored at the APWA Kansas City Metro Chapter’s Holiday Party Wednesday, Dec. 15 at the Marriott Muehlebach Tower.
