REVISED: Red Bridge traffic switches to new roadway
Construction is proceeding on Red Bridge Road between Holmes Road and Blue River Road, allowing crews to move traffic onto the eastbound lanes of the new roadway on Thursday, Dec. 23.
During this construction, 110th Street and Harrison Street will close to through traffic from Dec. 23 through mid-summer 2011. Speed limits will be set at 25 miles per hour until completion of construction.
The two-year construction project will improve Red Bridge Road between Holmes Road and Blue River Road, adding curbs, sidewalks and other amenities to the south Kansas City arterial. In addition, the project will replace the current Red Bridge over the Blue River with a new structure more suited to the traffic needs of the area. The current Red Bridge will become a pedestrian and bicycle bridge on the nearby Minor Park fitness trail.
“This project eliminates an at-grade railroad crossing that too often delays police cars, fire trucks and ambulances responding to emergencies for minutes at a time,” said Sixth District Councilman John Sharp. “It also elevates the street to prevent closures due to flooding and straightens the street to replace the existing dangerous curves.”
"I'm extremely pleased with this project, both as a structural and aesthetic benefit to the Sixth District," said Sixth District Councilwoman at large Cathy Jolly. "The new amenities of the roadway and the unique aesthetics of the bridge itself will build on the charm of the park and the Red Bridge area."
Detour signs and changeable message boards will be posted prior to the transfer.
Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this closure or the Red Bridge Road construction project should be directed to Sean Demory, communications manager for the Capital Projects Office, 816-513-0059.
