Health Department director reappointed to national board
Dr. Rex Archer, director of the City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department, was reappointed last week to the Public Health Accreditation Board.
The board focuses on developing a voluntary national accreditation for state and local public health departments. By setting standards and goals for improvement, accreditation can help health departments to better affect the general health of the communities they protect.
“The public has long been served by hospitals and boards of education that are accredited,” Archer said. “It is just as important that they are served by accredited public health departments.”
The City’s Health Department was the first health department in Missouri to be accredited through the state’s accreditation process in 2004. In 2008, the department was re-accredited at the highest level of accreditation offered by the Missouri Institute for Community Health, the state’s accreditation agency.
Dr. Archer was previously selected to be a member of the first fully constituted board in 2008 and has been reappointed to serve a three-year term.
"I know first-hand the level of professionalism we have within Kansas City's government,” said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. “Appointments like this one for Dr. Archer serve as outside confirmation of the important work being done by the Health Department, particularly in our preparedness for large-scale, epidemiological issues."
