The City of Kansas City, Mo. is pleased to announce the appointment of Mari Ruck as its new Commissioner of Revenue within the Revenue Division of the Finance Department, effective Monday, Dec. 13. As commissioner, Ruck will oversee a staff of 57 full-time employees and an operation responsible for collection of nearly $600 million in taxes and fees including the City’s earnings; hotel, restaurant, utilities and arena taxes; business license fees; and administration of state collected sales, use, gaming and motor fuel taxes.
Ruck has more than 30 years of varied tax, auditing and accounting experience. Her most recent position was finance director of Habitat for Humanity Kansas City. Additional work experience includes six years as a senior analyst and tax auditor with the City of Kansas City, Mo.; 20 years as chief financial officer of the Bosque Company in Shawnee, Kan.; and four years as a senior auditor in the Chicago office of Ernst and Young.
"The City is fortunate to have someone of such abilities fill this key position in the Revenue Division," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "With substantial experience in City Hall in addition to the profit and non-profit sectors, she brings a wealth of knowledge that will benefit the City."
“I believe Mari has the right combination of practical work experience and business acumen to take on the very challenging position of Commissioner of Revenue,” said Director of Finance Randall J. Landes. “Her diverse background in tax, auditing, non-profit and as a small business owner should provide a fresh management approach to the division and improve the City’s overall tax collection and enforcement efforts.”
Ruck has a B.S. degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting from Oregon State University and is currently working on her Master’s of Public Administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
