Barry Road bridge reopens Nov. 19

The City of Kansas City, Mo. is advising motorists that work on the Barry Road improvement project will reach a major milestone this Friday with the reopening of the Barry Road bridge over Rush Creek, west of North Amity Avenue.

“The new bridge provides a much safer route and coincides well with the Barry Road widening project that has been working its way west over the past few years," said 2nd District Councilman at large Ed Ford. "We appreciate the patience of the nearby residents and motorists who have been inconvenienced by the closure of this bridge.”

The City’s Public Works Department closed the bridge in summer 2008, declaring the structure an immediate danger to motorists. The replacement was included in the second phase of the Barry Road improvement project, which widens and upgrades Barry Road between North Amity Avenue and North Conant Avenue.

"I know how important this bridge is to our Northland residents, and I know the symbolism it carries because of the tragic accident that occurred here," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "The reopening comes as welcome news to the neighbors and businesses nearby, who have had to endure detours and traffic delays for two years. I appreciate their patience, and I am glad to see this bridge open to traffic safer and better than before."

Work started on Barry Road in 2009 and is anticipated to be fully complete in 2012. The roadway will be open from Northwest Potomac Avenue to the end of the construction site on base asphalt.

“I look forward, as I know do my constituents, to traveling a new Barry Road bridge that is now safe for our citizens,” said 2nd District Councilman Russ Johnson.

When complete, the project will improve Northwest Barry Road from Northwest Potomac Avenue to North Conant Avenue and North Amity from Northwest Barry Road to the westbound on-ramp for Missouri Highway 152. The improvements will include the bridge replacement; two major culvert replacements; sight distance improvements; sidewalk, curb and gutter installation; pavement widening; storm sewer improvements; and water main upgrades.

The Capital Projects Office managed the design and construction of this project for the City’s Public Works Department.

Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this project should be directed to Sean Demory, Capital Projects Office, at 816-513-0059 or e-mail sean_demory@kcmo.org.

Media note: Mayor Mark Funkhouser and 2nd District Councilmembers will comment briefly and tour the construction site on Friday, Nov. 19 prior to the reopening of Barry Road.
