Engage KC Leadership seeks to register 5,000 new voters

The Engage KC Leadership Board launched its Rock the Vote Campaign this month with the intent to register 5,000 new young adult voters and motivate them to take an interest in political issues.

For more than two decades the national Rock the Vote organization has aimed to blend popular culture with American politics. This year, the Engage KC Leadership Board will embark on a local campaign to not only register young adults to vote but to also educate them about how to become informed and aware of ballot issues.

“The Rock the Vote Campaign is a great opportunity for young adults to become engaged in the political process and to ensure their voice is represented,” said Councilwoman Deb Hermann.

Young adults in Kansas City can learn more about this campaign by visiting the Rock the Vote website, Additionally, they are encouraged to attend various Rock the Vote events throughout the Kansas City area this fall sponsored by the Engage KC Leadership Board. More information on these events can be found at

The deadline to register to vote for the November elections is Oct. 6, 2010.

"If you’re concerned about crime in your neighborhood, if you’re concerned about jobs, you need to participate in the political process. You need to get registered. You need to vote," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. “People think that politics is something for somebody else. From voting, to showing up at events, to showing up at public hearings, your input it is absolutely vital. Get involved.”

“The elections this fall will undoubtedly shape the future for Kansas City and America as a whole,” said Councilwoman Cathy Jolly. “Now is the time for the young people of the City to learn about ballot issues, register to vote and unite in an effort to influence American politics and public policy.”
