Health Department expands online food handler class options
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department has announced a partnership with ServSafe Food Safety® to offer an additional online food handler training option. The training, which can be completed in about an hour, is an alternative to the food handler training course offered at the Health Department, which will continue to be an option.
“Although our regular food handler classes at the Health Department are very well received and are the preferred training option, we understand that not everyone is able to work their schedule to attend the classes,” said Bert Malone, manager of the Environmental Health Services division.
The training is available on the Health Department website, www.kcmo.org/health, and at www.servsafe.com. ServSafe Food Safety® is a product of the National Restaurant Association. The online class costs of $25 includes all Health Department fees. The online class is currently available in audio and video, and in English and Spanish. Additional language options will be available in the future. English, Spanish and Mandarin options are available through StateFoodSafety.comTM.
At the end of the online class session, handlers will be asked to complete an online test. If they do not pass the test in the first two attempts, they will be asked to retake the class for an additional $25.
Upon completion of the course, food handlers will need to print their certificate, bring it to the Health Department and answer a few brief questions to obtain a Food Handler Card. Food Handler Cards may be obtained on Mondays from 8-11 a.m. and Fridays from 8-11 a.m. and 1-3:30 p.m. at the Kansas City Health Department, 2400 Troost Ave.
At this time, online training for Food Managers is not available.
