Human Relations Department holds Kansas City Government Contracting and Procurement Forum

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Human Relations Department will host the fourth annual Kansas City Government Contracting and Procurement Forum in partnership with the State of Missouri and the Mid America Minority Business Development Council. The forum will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 5 at the Hyatt Regency Crown Center, 2345 McGee Street Kansas City, MO 64108. Admission is free, but registration is required to attend.

KCGCP is the product of a coalition of representatives, from a variety of organizations, who share a common goal of providing small business owners information and contacts that will help their business succeed and grow. Forum attendees learn to navigate the maze of government contracting and receive critical information, networking opportunities and access to local and regional business partners.

“Small homegrown business is the engine that powers Kansas City’s economy, and we want to do everything we can to make sure our small businesses and entrepreneurs have all the information they need to compete for government contracts,” said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. “I encourage Kansas City business owners to attend and pick up some tips on how to best work with the City, other government agencies in our region and the federal government.”

City departments, local municipalities, state and federal agencies will have informational displays and promote opportunities available to area businesses. Focus will be on providing attendees with details of government needs as well as insight into the best business practices for submitting bids. Several Kansas City area government entities with multimillion-dollar projects will give detailed presentations regarding current and upcoming project needs.

“The Human Relations Department’s increased efforts to streamline certifications and improve collaboration with vested stakeholders and community partners have enabled the City to reach the highest level of minority participation since the program’s inception,” said Phillip Yelder, director, Human Relations Department. “Through the end of April 2010, MWBE utilization was approximately 29.45 percent of the City of Kansas City, Mo. awarded contracting dollars. I hope that the attendees of this forum take advantage of everything that KCGCP has to offer; and that the investment of their time proves profitable.”

The event is also hosting an awards luncheon. The Awards Recognition Ceremony will honor contractors and small businesses that have demonstrated a commitment to minority business development. Carlton Highsmith, founder of Specialized Packaging will present the luncheon address. Mr. Highsmith is recognized nationally as an advocate for economic inclusion and for expanding economic opportunities for all Americans through entrepreneurship and business ownership. The cost of the luncheon is $40. Attendees may register to attend the awards luncheon.
