Engage KC Leadership Board seeks to develop young adult leaders

The City of Kansas City, Mo. is currently recruiting members for the sixth leadership class, one of several developmental initiatives sponsored by the City Manager’s Office.

The Engage KC Leadership Board (formerly known as the Kansas City Youth Commission) helps to build Kansas City leaders of the future by focusing on leadership skills, teamwork and knowledge of the community today. Topics throughout the eleven month term include Education, Environment, Marketing and Communications, Public Policy, Governmental Services, Workforce Development presented through discussions, tours, seminars, and informational meetings. Leaders will also participate in a one-day retreat to build relationships and leadership skills.

“The goal of Engage KC is to acquaint young people with these aspects of the community and to increase their awareness of leadership roles that are available to them both now and in the future,” said Councilwoman Jan Marcason, 4th district. “The better we educate our young residents about the facets of life that make Kansas City strong, the better they will be prepared to become our future community leaders. Part of that leadership preparation comes from developing relationships with others, which is also a focal point of the retreat and the sessions that follow.”

Interested young people ages 16-24 may contact the Principal or Chancellor at their respective academic institutions or apply online at www.kcmo.org, or contact the Office of Civic and Community Engagement at 816-513-1378. The application deadline is May 15th.

“We really enjoy working with the young adults in this program each year,” Councilwoman Sharon Sanders Brooks of the 3rd district, said. “I’m always impressed with how these young people mature and develop an awareness of their own community, and learn things they did not know about Kansas City. We look forward to meeting and working with each new class.”

A selection committee comprised of a cross-sector of leaders, will review applications and recommend the rising leaders to the Mayor and City Council for final selection. The 2010-11 Engage KC Leadership Board term will run from June 2010 through May 2011.

Media inquiries should be addressed to Thalia Cherry, City Manager's Office, 816-513-1378.
