Southland clinic site announced at March 31 news conference

The City of Kansas City, Mo., in partnership with Swope Health Services and the Local Investment Commission, announced the selection of a site for a new clinic today in south Kansas City. The Swope Health South Clinic will be located at 8821 Troost Ave.

“This is a monumental day. We have all been working towards this goal since I was in the state legislature, meeting with community partners to plan a clinic south of 75th Street, to address health needs in the Southland,” said Councilwoman Cathy Jolly, 6th District at large and co-chair for the Health Commission. “It is very gratifying to take this step towards opening that clinic, and to know that because of the passing of the health care reform bill, more funding for clinics of this type will be made available.”

The selected site was among 33 reviewed by a selection committee made up of representatives from LINC; the City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department; and Swope Health Services. The selection committee considered a variety of factors, including health indicators, transportation, accessibility and a feasibility study conducted by LINC.

“The selection committee put a great deal of effort into assuring that all options were considered,” said Dr. Rex Archer, director of the Health Department. “We know that there are many areas of need, and this clinic is a great first step in reaching one of those areas. We are now beginning the planning process for the next clinic site.”

The Swope Health South Clinic will be funded in part by a $320,000 grant from the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City, with another $200,000 provided by the City. The remainder of the funding for the clinic is expected to come from Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements and copayments.

Media inquiries on this topic should be directed to Jeff Hershberger, public information officer for the Health Department, (816) 840-2548 (pager).
