Bike/Pedestrian coordinator receives Innovation Award

The City of Kansas City, Mo., bicycle and pedestrian coordinator, Deb Ridgway, has been recognized by Safe Kids Metro KC with the 2009 Innovation Award for her work founding and leading the Share the Road Safety Task Force. The task force brings together community safety advocates from across the region representing health, law enforcement, elected officials and municipal staff to address the high incidence of fatalities and crashes involving bicyclists and pedestrians.

“While it is always a pleasure to be recognized for hard work, the task of ensuring the safety of bicyclists and pedestrians is an ongoing effort that we all must be part of,” Ridgway said. “It is imperative that all of us do our part to make it safe for residents to bike and walk in our communities.”

As the City’s bicycle and pedestrian coordinator, Ridgway has actively led enforcement events with Share the Road Safety Task Force members, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Mid-America Regional Council and KU Medical Center Police Department. The goal of these events has been to educate and enforce traffic laws as they apply to pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. Most recently, Ridgway secured a grant to distribute reflective safety items and flashing red lights along with education materials on the importance of being seen at night for joggers, dog walkers and bicyclists.

The Safe Kids Metro KC program works with community partners to prevent accidental injury and death to children 14 and under by educating adults and children, creating safe environments, conducting research and advocating for effective laws.
