The Kansas City-Xi’an Sister City Committee, under the leadership of Chairman Bob Chien, has received three of Sister City International’s highest awards: the Innovative Award for Public Safety, the Education Award for the Xi’an School Project; and national Volunteer of the Year Award, presented to Chien.
The mission from Xi’an to Kansas City represents the culmination of a three-year China strategy, which included leveraging the sister cities program as a “door opener” for trade and as an innovative economic development tool. Mayor ProTem Bill Skaggs led two successful missions to China in 2007 and 2008 focused on trade and the City’s global strategy with Asia.
The 20th Anniversary celebration was organized by the City of Kansas City, Mo., City Manager’s Office, Mayor’s Office, Parks and Recreation Department, the Society for Friendship with China, Edgar Snow Memorial Fund, Husch Blackwell Sanders LLP, Kansas City Chinese Association, Kansas City Convention and Visitors Association, Kansas City Public Library, KC-Xian Sister City Committee, Kauffman Foundation, KU Confucius Institute and US-China Association.
