FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 23, 2009
Beardsley Road closed for 12th Street Viaduct repair
The City of Kansas City Mo., is alerting motorists that repairs to the 12th Street Viaduct will close Beardsley Road between Bluff Street and 17th Street until late July.
Detour routes are:
- Southbound traffic - East on 5th Street to Broadway Street
- South on Broadway Street to 17th Street
- West on 17th Street to Beardsley Road
Last month, Missouri Department of Transportation inspectors found extensive deterioration on the bridge during a routine inspection of the structure. In order to ensure the safety of the traveling public, the 12th Street Viaduct was closed shortly thereafter.
In order to complete critical repairs on 12th Street and reopen the bridge, it is necessary to close Beardsley Road between Bluff Street and 17th Street during construction. This will allow the contractor access to the underside of the bridge to make repairs.
The City’s Capital Improvements Management Office was overseeing renovation of the 12th Street Viaduct at the time of the closure, and is in charge of the repair process. City staff and the contractor have worked to shorten the construction schedule wherever possible.
Emergency repairs on the 12th Street Viaduct are scheduled for completion in late July 2009. Beardsley Road will be closed until August.
Upon completion, the bridge will be partially reopened to traffic until renovation is complete. Full completion of the 12th Street Bridge renovation is scheduled for summer 2010.
Media inquiries about the closure or the 12th Street Viaduct project should be directed to Sean Demory, communications manager for the Capital Improvements Management Office, (816) 513-0059.
